What is ISS / Pro Evolution Soccer?

Originally on the SNES - ISS, then ISS Deluxe, on PS1, ISS Pro, ISS Pro Evolution, ISS Pro Evolution 2, and now on the PS2, Pro Evolution Soccer 1 & 2, whatever incarnation, ISS Pro Evo has consistently been the best football game around, always far better than the more famous FIFA series, or any of your little "This Is Footballs, UEFA Champions League, etc.

ISS gives you the most realistic, enjoyable simulation / action of football. Every goal is a reward, and different - no FIFA sweet spots!!
Anyone can pick up and immediately feel they know the game, - just think of what youve seen on Match of the Day and make it happen!
However, the games greatness lies in the depth of the gameplay. Beginners will have little chance against experienced players, unlike your FIFA's where anyone can score a bicycle kick on their first go. And a match between two masters is a chess game, a premiership clash with quality moves and skills compared to the fumbling Division 3 style of a new player.

ISS Pro Evolution is the best series of football games there is, and will continue to be so.

OK, what does ISSsoc do?

ISSsoc's main purpose is to host regular tournaments, (usually on saturday afternoons) and events to give players a chance to test themselves against other ambitious competitors, or to just have a laugh. The society in no means excludes anybody because they aren't the best in the world at the game, there are plenty of opportunities to just meet up and have a few games, and then go get pissed etc.
- However, due to the nature of the game, the emphasis will obviously be on a competitive spirit.
The society will also be organising 5-a-sides, nights out etc.

Through the website and events, the society hopes to put as many players in contact with each other as possible - gaming is now officially recognised as a way of socialising and meeting new people.

Eventually, ISSsoc hopes to encourage other universities to start clubs, and will be inviting students from other uni's to come and take part in our events.
We also hope to establish links with the European organisations, with a view to sending over some players to big tournaments on the continent.

Erm, ok, i'll have a go. How do i join?

We'll be at Fresher's Fayre with an extravegant stall of tempters, you can sign up there for about £3 for the year.
As a member you get a membership card, reduced entry to prize winning competitions, email updates about events, and maybe some free stuff if we can get any!

If you've missed Fresher's Fayre, you can

Can I win stuff?

Yes, there will be prizes at any event with an entrance fee, and they will be as big as possible,
Its normally cash, you can't really go wrong with that, but its all about taking part really! Prizes will be given down to about 3rd place normally.

What are the tournament rules etc?

How big is this thing?

In 2002 as we set it up we wrote: ISSsoc? we don't know yet. Most people we've mentioned it to say that either they or friends of theres will be mad for it, and we had to get a certain number of interested people just to set it up. We're hoping it'll be massive, and gettin people from other uni's involved as well should make it biggg. But its guessing at the moment, cos this will be our first year.
Now we know: in both our years so far over 110 people have joined the society, with many more just turning up to tournaments, and as PES gathers more and more of a following, so do we.

Pro Evolution Soccer gaming?..
In the UK, there arent many big tournaments and stuff at the moment, but theres a massive following for the game, just check out the community on
PESfan.
We think ISSsoc is the first actual organisation for the game in the UK, but through our existence we hope to encourage more, because....

In Europe...
It's bloody huge. France has a national league, with 3000 registered players. There are about 3 tournaments every weekend around the country, with hundreds of euros prize money.
It's a similar story in Belgium, and there are regular organised events throughout the rest of Europe.

We want to make it as big as this in the UK.

Obvisouly there's the official PES League now, but thats kind of shit. We're better

Aren't you a bit obsessed / a bunch of geeks?

No. we aren't. we're reasonable normal, we dont all wear glasses, have spots and go round going "errrrr" all the time.
Taking the time to set this up was a big thing, but its just cos we like doing something and want to do it with as many people as possible, geddit.

I'm confused. I've played ISS on the XBox / Gamecube / PC, is this that?

No. This is a confusion, and we should really have called the society Pro Evolution Society. As well as Pro Evo, Konami has another development team who make the series which is now called plainly ISS. This originated on the N64 with ISS 64, while the other team worked on the Pro Evolution series, which we follow.
However, the buttons are the same, so you can smoothly change to the better game. (ours) (Pro Evolution Soccer)
